Meet our Rural Pioneers
Return to Rural’s Communications Gal, Larae Pearson, took a #ruralRoadTrip to Special Area No. 3 near Kirremuir, Alberta to Double F Farms, the home of Craig and Jinel Ference and their three children, Maddie, Macey, and Nate. The Ferences are the 3rd generation pursuing agriculture.
Craig grew up around the area and went to school in Altario. After graduation, he worked abroad on a farm in Moree, New South Wales, Australia. The couple met at University – Craig studied Business, and Jinel, raised in the small community of Stavely, AB, was studying to become a teacher. Craig considered returning home during University. It was in him to come back, take over and grow the the family operation. His dad is still heavily involved, and is there for a lot of support. When he returned they were mainly a cow/calf operation, and since then, they’ve expanded the operation to Biggar, Saskatchewan. They have been focused on diversification and now not only run a large cow/calf herd, but a finishing feedlot, grain farm and do custom farming as well.

219: Craig Ference - Thousands of Cows Grazing Corn!
I really enjoyed discussing Craig’s operation and perspectives on things from diversification vs. specialization on a large farm and ranch, to land ownership and more. We also discuss his unique cow program which involves grazing thousands of cows on thousands of acres of corn every year! Check out www.pharocattle.com
